"My backyard, almost literally! It is only a five minute drive to the River Run Gondola from my door, indeed I am a lucky guy. Keystone is a truly magnificent mountain with some of the longest ski runs of any mountain and some hidden gems for those in the know. Well known for its parks and pipes, the iconic A-51 terrain park is is revered amongst those who come to play hard, Keystone offers a wide variety of long and open, meticulously groomed beginner and intermediate terrain as well as some gnarly trees and leg-burning bumps. This is an ideal destination for families with children since River Run Village sits right at the base of the lifts and the children’s learning area is located midway up the mountain with a covered magic carpet. The little ones LOVE the experience of actually getting up and down the mountain easily by riding the gondola both ways.
My first love is for powder and Keystone’s got it! I have a preference for moguls, check. Although Keystone does not offer the extreme steeps that complete my triumvirate, there is plenty of challenging terrain to keep a smile plastered on my face all day. When Mother Nature has blessed us with a decent batch of fresh powder my typical path starts with a ride up the River Run Gondola where I head straight over the top past the Outpost Gondola loading station. Rather than following the herd down the trail, I take a sharp left turn just below the gondola and follow the Cat Track around then hop into the Windows terrain on the right. These are fairly open tree runs, a short hike towards the end of the Cat Track accesses the Upper Windows for a longer and less traveled tree run. The run-out at the bottom takes you down to the Santiago Express lift.
At the top of Santiago, there is a choice to make, either ski through the access gate and head into some of the best trees on Keystone or head under the lift and take a right onto Ambush. If it is a powder day, the trees is where it is at! After a few tree runs, it is time to hit Ambush for one of the longest bump runs on the mountain. If you have any legs left after a few Ambush runs, head right off of the lift and finish them off on Cat Dancer and Cat South Glades. That is the best of Keystone, and now it is time for a beer in the Kickapoo Tavern in River Run Village!
